Munch Museum is situated at Tøyen in the Oslo borough of Gamle Oslo.Construction of the museum was financed from the profits generated by the Oslo municipal cinemas and opened its doors in 1963 to commemorate what would have been Munch's 100th birthday. As if the imminent opening of Oslo’s Edvard Munch museum wasn’t exciting enough, now there’s a new furniture collection to shop with it! Following the announcement that Vestre would produce a furniture series for the opening, the museum ran a national competition to find the best designers to collaborate with the furniture brand. Estudio Herreros won the contract to design the new Munch museum back in 2009, and after some uncertaintity on both design and location (the museum sits on Bjørvika bay - a trendy new waterfront district in Oslo), construction got underway in 2016."The building is there, it has a powerful presence, and it is part of the city," notes Juan Herreros. The future Munch Museum is not just a facility for the safeguarding and dissemination of a fundamental piece of heritage of the history and character of Norwegian culture. This is a unique opportunity to develop a contemporary concept of a museum with a transcendental urban role and a historic responsibility as a cohesive element of the community, not only of Oslo but of the entire nation.
